If you have children, there’s a good chance they’ve taken it upon themselves to bless you with some “street art” – only they probably didn’t make it all the way to the street before they started drawing! Why would they have gone through all the trouble to get outside when there was a perfect, white wall to use as a canvas right there in the living room? And, of course, your little Picasso(s) decided to “bless” you on the night before your landlord was scheduled to come for her annual inspection. “No problem,” many a well-intentioned rookie has said, “because I just happened to save some of the paint I used on that wall and it will certainly have time to dry overnight once I repaint it.” Problem solved, right? Wrong! Next morning, the red pencil composition was there laughing at you … as though you had done nothing to it at all. So of course, you apply a second and then a third coat, only to be mocked again by the seemingly permanent artwork.
That’s when you call a seasoned veteran “homeowner with young, creative children” and learn that pencil marks on a wall can’t simply be covered over with layers and layers of fresh paint – that they must first be sealed by something strong and effective enough to squelch them. Only then, you discover, can a fresh coat of paint be effective.
The same is also true with the stains that have been created in our own lives … on the walls of our hearts and souls. They can’t simply be hidden, covered over by layers and layers of fresh paint. They must be dealt with by a process that’s strong enough to squelch them – quarantine and seal them – render them ineffective and powerless in their attempt to destroy our hope and even hinder our sense of God’s presence.
