ARE YOU THE ONE?
John had pointed his disciples to Jesus. He had baptized him in the Jordan. But now as he sat in prison and Jesus did nothing to get him out, he was having his doubts. Nothing was working out the way he thought it should. He sent some messengers to ask Jesus, “Are you the one or should we keep looking?”
Maybe it was a sarcastic way of asking if his cousin would be breaking him out of jail soon. Probably, it was a legitimate question. John was feeling disillusioned and needed hope. Jesus’ answer is perfect . . .
What do you think?
Jesus cured a bunch of sick people, kicked out some evil spirits, and gave sight to some blind people. Then he basically said, what do you think? Go back and tell John what you see. The blind see, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the good news is being preached to the poor.
This is basically what he said about a good tree bearing good fruit. It’s what he claimed when he read Isaiah 61 in his hometown. “Today this Scripture is fulfilled”. Look at what he is doing and decide for yourself. Even if things aren’t going your way, Jesus is still on the move John. Don’t let your expectations of what should be happening keep you from seeing the good things that are happening.
Jesus is the one and only
Jesus is the generosity of God in action. He overflows health and freedom and vision and hearing and life to those who need it. This is just who he is. So it’s what he does. You can see it on every page. The grace (generosity) of God is made manifest in this man. He is God’s very essence Incarnated.
If you look too long at your own circumstances or expectations, you might miss the truth that is right in front of you. If you want to know what God is like, look no further than Jesus. He is the one.
