My Dad’s Bible

My dad’s Bible lived on the back of his toilet. His bathroom, more affectionately known as his office, was the place my brothers and I would come to ask our questions, appeal our cases against each other, or tell him about our latest ideas or exploits. I know that’s not normal, but neither is our family.

I bought him a new Bible once.  It never made it to the privileged place of this one he had since I was a boy. There is no Bible like the one you know inside and out.  You can find things.  Romans is about a thumb in from the back cover.  John 3:16 is in the middle on the left side. I don’t know if I’ll ever truly get used to digital Bibles.  Having every translation in my pocket is nice, but there is something to be said for leather and paper and ink.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3:14-17 NIV

What is the Bible?

Holy Scriptures.  Set apart writings of those who have gone before us, inspired by a perfect God and written  by flawed men to point us to the salvation that comes through Jesus.  It didn’t drop down out of heaven. The Bible was written in pieces and collected over time and passed down through families. It isn’t a magical book that can answer all our questions, but it is a useful library that can make us wise and lead us to Jesus.

What is the Bible for?

This book is useful for teaching us about our family story. It works for rebuking our bad thinking or behavior to straighten us out. Read or listen to this book! It will direct your path, train you to do what is right, and prepare you to guide others. But it won’t do it for you. You are the one that needs to continue in what you learned. You are the one that still needs to go to Jesus for the eternal kind of life. Keep reading with us. This book served my dad well. It will lead you in the right path too.
