July 31st | Made for More Series | Sunday Service | Mountain View Church
This is Pastor Art writing. I identify myself because I want to make a confession here: In my darkest seasons and most unfiltered state of being, I love being recognized; I crave affirmation; I can’t stand to go without receiving credit for something I’ve done; I chafe at not being recognized as the hero of a story in which I played the primary role… And this, ladies and gentlemen, is who you have serving as your interim pastor.
See why it was necessary for me to identify myself as the author of these paragraphs (even though I was tempted to identify as “Andy McCraw” instead)? I succeed far more often now than I did early in my career as a Christian, but there is still a temptation in me, one that resides in all of us at different levels and in different forms: the temptation to transport ourselves back to the garden, stand before the forbidden tree, and yield to pride and self-absorption—in all its devilish, poisonous forms.
It certainly doesn’t help that, from virtually every angle and on just about every day, the message we’re receiving from media, coworkers, and even family members implies an endorsement of the temptation to spin a nice story about how essential we are. But we were made for more. We were made for the much higher practice encouraged by Jesus. And honestly, I find that living into the more for which we were made is the most foundational and difficult challenge of my Christian faith.
Perhaps that’s been your experience too. Read John chapter 6, then join us this Sunday morning as we explore the more that is the Jesus way.
